Ozone Injections for Strains, Sprains, and Trigger Points

Have you ever had your back “give out”?

Recently a patient came in with his entire back in spasms. He could barely get in and out of chairs, was walking down the hall very slowly with great effort, and couldn’t stand up straight. A few ozone injections later, he got off the table much faster than he got on, was able to stand up straight, and his spasms were greatly improved. Another patient came in for exacerbation of his chronic back pain- a few injections later his back felt better than it had for years. The spasms kept improving over the weeks following the treatment.

Ozone therapy for strains, sprains, and muscle spasms involves injecting weakly concentrated ozone gas under the skin and into the muscles. It works by increasing oxygen and blood flow in the tissue, reducing inflammation, promoting healing, and helping rebuild healthy tissue. This usually doesn’t need numbing since weak ozone is used, but procaine (a local anesthetic) can be used if the injections are painful or if there is nerve pain.

Similarly, ozone therapy can significantly help trigger points. Trigger points are areas where muscles and fascia become “knotted up,” greatly reducing blood flow to the area. This irritates the nerves that go to that area, which in turn cause the muscles to spasm more. Trigger point release massage can help but usually requires multiple treatments over a long period of time. Ozone can help release these areas with 1-3 treatments and greatly reduce the pain immediately. Ozone trigger point therapy involves injecting an anti-inflammatory and numbing solution into the trigger points, followed by ozone gas.
